How to remember the characters used in a Chinese word?
For example, is "途径" or "徐径" the correct word for "way"?

It's easy to get mixed up when the characters look almost the same.

What's one to do? Learn by heart? 

How about playing word search instead?

Repeated references to the character pair while looking for the Chinese word help to imprint it in memory. 

Each word search is based on a module (单元) from Singapore secondary Chinese textbook《华文伴我行》.
